Queridos amigos, vecinos, compañeros en la lucha por el progreso y la justicia, Gracias por su activismo y por no perder la esperanza de que juntos podemos crear una comunidad en que todos podamos vivir con seguridad y dignidad.
Dear Friends, neighbors, companions in the struggle for justice and progress. First, I want to thank you for your activism and for believing that together we can construct a more just community, where all can live safely and with dignity.
Gracias a todas y cada una de las organizaciones que componen Justicia Unida por su apoyo a la comunidad inmigrante. Gracias por luchar por nuestra seguridad, por la salud mental de nuestra gente, y por el acceso a servicios de salud y ayuda financiera.
Thanks to all of you and the organizations that comprise JU for your support of the immigrant community. Thanks for fighting for our safety, for the mental health of our families and for access to health services and financial assistance.
Yo he estado en todas las luchas con ustedes. Y también he luchado con ustedes por justicia en la valorización de nuestras propiedades—de nuestros hogares—por fondos para vivienda asequible, y por apoyo a las comunidades Afro-Americanas, históricamente marginadas cuya habilidad de vivir y prosperar en nuestro condado está en riesgo.
I have been in all these fights with you. And we have fought together for justice in the valuation of our homes before, and for money for home repairs and for affordable housing and for support of historic African American communities, whose ability to live and prosper in our county is at risk.
Lo que estamos exigiendo hoy no es algo nuevo. Hace cuatro años también venimos pidiendo justicia. Nos organizamos… y pensamos que los comisionados nos habían escuchado y que habría cambios…
What we are asking the County Commissioners to commit to today is not something new. We were here 4 years ago, asking for justice. We organized, and we thought we had been heard and that changes would be made.
Y tal vez nos escucharon y se olvidaron… o surgieron otras prioridades.
Maybe they heard us and then forgot… or other issues took priority.
Es por eso que lancé mi candidatura para comisionada. Porque cuando estábamos empezando a organizar esta asamblea pensé: Necesitamos un candidato que CREA que la vivienda segura es un derecho, y que es absolutamente necesario rectificar esta situación…. Alguien que esté comprometido a que jamás vuelva a cometerse esta injusticia…
This is why I’m running for commissioner. Because when we were starting to organize I thought: What we need is someone who believes housing is a human right. Someone who believes we MUST rectify this wrong. Somebody who will make sure this injustice NEVER happens under their watch.
Pensé: necesitamos alguien que exija que el sistema de tasación que se proponga sea evaluado por representantes expertos de la comunidad ANTES de implementarse para asegurarse que sea un sistema equitativo y que proteja a las comunidades vulnerables.
I thought: we need someone who will make sure that whatever new proposal is put forth is evaluated by the community’s experts BEFORE it is voted on to insure it is equitable and protects our most vulnerable communities.
