What does a County Commissioner Do?

Here are some of the things county commissioners do in most counties that also apply here in Orange County.

  • Policy & Legislation: Establish county policies, set goals, and pass ordinances (local laws).
  • Budget & Finance: Adopt the annual budget, set tax rates, and manage county finances.
  • Administration: Direct and supervise county departments (like sheriff, health, transportation) and appoint key officials, such as the County Attorney or Manager.
  • Infrastructure: Supervise construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, manage county property, and handle solid waste disposal.
  • Community Services: Provide funding for schools, establish parks, manage environmental issues, and oversee public safety and welfare.
  • Representation: Serve as liaisons to state and federal bodies and advocate for county interests.
